From his humble beginnings in Michigan’s upper peninsula, he ventured out into the world upon turning 18 to join the U.S. Air Force. He met our beloved mother, Celia, overseas. He served his country for over 20 years including two year long tours of duty in Thailand during the Vietnam War. After he retired from the military, he worked as a logistics engineer for McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed Martin where he worked for over 25 years. He was first in his family to receive a college degree. He loved fishing and reading crime thriller and espionage novels. He will be remembered as a keen horticulturist, for laughing during gory scenes in movies, and having a soft spot for his pets.
Lowell is predeceased by Celia, his wife of 62 years. He is survived by his five children, Maria Matthews, Patricia Matthews, William Matthews, Dawn Marie Berlanga-Helms (nee Matthews), and Lowell Matthews, Jr., and his 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren - all of whom he was very proud and loved.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff at Big Bend Hospice’s First Commerce Center for Compassionate Care.
At Lowell’s request, no public services will be held.
