On Sunday, December 1, 2019, Malcolm Edward "Mal" Fitzgerald, loving father of four children, passed away peacefully at age 81, after a short illness. He was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, to Edward and Helen Fitzgerald, a few months before the Great New England Hurricane of 1938. He graduated from Boston Technical High School and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy before he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, where he served honorably for twenty years. He met and married his wife Babe, and they raised one daughter, Eileen, and three sons, Michael, James, and John.

Mal had a passion for education and earned three advanced degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School and the University of South Florida. He immensely enjoyed sharing his considerable knowledge with others and spent hours preparing presentations on subjects as diverse as ancient Chinese history and environmental sustainability.

Mal was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Helen, and his wife, Babe. He is survived by his four children, his sister Denise, his brother Bill, several nieces and nephews, five grandsons and three granddaughters, as well as many extended family members. He will be missed.

I have precious memories of you Uncle Mal. As a young girl, I remember fishing with you at the cabin and horseback riding with my cousins and of course, Aunt Babe always cracking jokes or being silly. I sure wish we would’ve lived closer to see each other more but you were still good about phone calls, emails and Christmas cards/letters....and always a kind, gentle word. I love you and know that you are reunited with Auntie and Dad and all of our loved ones that have gone before us. Rest In Peace my sweet Uncle❤️
