Marlene Devilbiss Johnson

Marlene was raised in Union Bridge, Maryland, by her parents, Otis and Lillie Devilbiss. She spent her early years helping in her father’s soda fountain. After high school, she attended college, earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and later a master’s degree from Cornell University. Following her studies, Marlene moved to Rochester, New York, where she worked for Rochester Gas & Electric and met Lee, her future husband. Marlene and Lee shared 58 years of marriage and built a life and family together.

Marlene was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She and Lee owned an apple farm, where she managed the orchard’s finances while raising their children and encouraging them to pursue education and follow their dreams.

After her children left for college, Marlene opened a bed and breakfast near Sodus Bay, New York, where she welcomed guests and formed lasting friendships.

Later in life, Marlene made her home in Tallahassee, Florida, where she became an active member of Fellowship Presbyterian Church. She cherished the friendships she formed through the church and through her Squares groups, enjoying gatherings filled with games, conversation, and laughter.

She is survived by her son Steve; daughter Sheila (Doug); granddaughter Arevik; and extended family members and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Vicki; husband Lee; brother Otis; and her parents.

A service celebrating Marlene’s life will be held at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

Marlene will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for her sharp wit, sense of humor, kindness, tenacity, faith, and generous spirit.
