Martin Ira Greenblatt passed away early Saturday morning after a long battle with esophageal and lung cancer. He died peacefully with his beloved wife Bonnie at his side. His favorite caregivers, Cocoa and Kim will always be remembered fondly for their kind and gentle manner throughout his ordeal.
The only child of Louis and Mildred Greenblatt, Martin was born and raised in Queens, New York. An excellent student, Martin graduated summa cum laude from Colgate University and went on to receive his Law Degree from New York Law School.
Martin began his career as a Public Defender in Jacksonville, Titusville, and Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee. For the last twenty-six years, Martin’s attention to detail served him well as a Proof Reader and Indexer for the publication of Florida Statutes. He enjoyed working with his coworkers and supervisors and thought of many of them as extended family.
A sweet and gentle soul, Martin was kind and generous to everyone he felt needed him. His quiet manner often gave way to witty and clever comments that made others take notice. He was an expert model builder, a student of Russian History, WWII history, and loved the games, Risk and Backgammon, and world travel. Martin spoke often of his multiple trips to Israel, Morocco, and Spain.
During his last days, Martin and Bonnie renewed their twenty-year wedding vows via telephone with Rabbi Phillip Labowitz, who officiated at their beautiful wedding in 1995.
His survivors include his wife, Bonnie Lake Greenblatt, a maternal uncle, Albert Steinberg, Cousins, Susan Zenkman (David), Lisa Friedman (Bruce) , John and Michele Ackermann, Stephen and Phyllis Tessel, Craig Lake, Beverly Lake (Mother-in-Law), and several nephews and nieces: Brandon and Joey Ackermann, Michael and Daniel Friedman , Rachel, Mara, and Jana Steinberg, and Isabelle Lake.
The graveside service for Martin will take place on Monday, September 29, 10:00am at Culleys on Timberlane Rd.
