

She was born Aug. 4, 1935, to Allen Corbin Cawthon II and Etta Powell Cawthon of DeFuniak Springs, FL, where the Cawthons were early settlers. At Washington County High School in Chipley, she was co-valedictorian of her senior class and drum majorette for the marching band. She also played bass clarinet in the concert band and the organ at her church.
Ms. Cawthon was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at Florida State University and Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity. She received her bachelor's degree in Art Education and taught in area public schools. She later received her master's degree in Counseling and Human Systems from FSU and worked in schools in three Florida counties. She was Executive Director of the Leon Association for Retarded Citizens, and director of the Cities in Schools drop-out prevention program at Atlantic High School in Delray Beach. She also was an adjunct professor supervising FSU elementary-education interns.
Ms. Cawthon was a past president of ZTA Alumni, a director of the Tallahassee Symphony Society, and a Volunteer of the Year. Other affiliations include the FSU Flying High Circus Alumni, United States Tennis Association, Goodwood, Delta Kappa Gamma educational society, the Junior League of Tallahassee, and the Greater Brandt Hills Neighborhood Association. She enjoyed Yoga, tennis, reading, painting and travel -- whether to Paris, Maine, Utah, or nearby Grayton Beach.
Ms. Cawthon is survived by four sons: Bryan Daniel (Gisela) of Arlington, Texas; Beaty Daniel of Panama City; Blake Daniel of San Francisco; and Brent Daniel of Tallahassee; four grandchildren, Christian, Benjamin, Samuel and Camberley, of Arlington; her sister, Lynda Cawthon Darnell (Dix) of Tallahassee; a niece, Allison Darnell Shad (Tommy), of Peachtree City, GA, and their children, Ashley and Allen Shad. Ms. Cawthon was predeceased by her brother, Allen Corbin Cawthon III; and a nephew, William Douglas Darnell.
A memorial service for Ms. Cawthon will be held on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 2 pm at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Chapel, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee. Her ashes will be placed in the Cawthon plot at DeFuniak Springs Magnolia Cemetery. Kindly consider becoming an organ donor and/or making a contribution to the Tallahassee Symphony Society.
