Michael Lee Gary, affectionately known as Mike, was born on April 12, 1952, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to the late J.C. and Dorothy Gary. One of three children, Mike lived a life filled with learning, music, meaningful friendships, and lasting connections with those fortunate enough to know him.
Mike attended LaGrange High School, graduating in 1971. Following graduation, he continued his education at McNeese University on a musical scholarship, where he studied Computer Science and earned an Associate Degree. This educational journey marked the beginning of his career as a Computer Programmer. Never one to stop learning, Mike continued taking college courses throughout his life. He often said he needed to "get up to date with the times," a reflection of his curiosity and desire to keep growing.
In 1972, Mike married the late Susan Ann Clements. From their union came two of his greatest blessings, his beloved son, Jason, whom he lovingly called "his boy," and his precious daughter, Nicole, affectionately known as his "baby girl." Although their marriage ended in 1987, the family they created remained an important part of his life's story.
Mike later embarked on a new chapter, traveling to Tallahassee, Florida, with a brief detour through North Carolina. No matter where life's journey took him, he always seemed to find his way back to Tallahassee. It truly became his "home away from home." There, he developed deep and lasting friendships with people who became more than friends; they became family.
Mike was a man of many talents, with a special gift for music. He could play the cello, piano, and organ, sharing his musical abilities as another expression of the many gifts he possessed. Beyond his love for music, Mike also held a special place in his heart for St. George Island, a place he truly loved and enjoyed. It was another one of those special places that brought him happiness and created memories he would always treasure. His intelligence, talents, love of life, and willingness to embrace new experiences made him a truly exceptional individual.
Mike's presence touched many lives. He was loved, appreciated, and cherished by family and friends alike. His life was woven together by the people he loved, the friendships he built, the knowledge he pursued, and the memories he leaves behind. Though he will be deeply missed, the impact he made and the love he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, J.C. Gary; his mother, Dorothy Gary; and his brother, Larry Gary.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Jason Gary; his daughter, Nicole (Derek) Clem; his granddaughter, Kortney Clem; his grandson, Preston Clem; his sister, Delores Leeth; and his stepfather, Luther Hoffpauir. He also leaves behind countless extended family members and dear friends whose lives were made better by knowing him.
Though his journey here has ended, the memories he created, the friendships he treasured, and the love he gave will remain forever.
Rest peacefully, Mike. You will always be loved, remembered, and missed.
