Mildred Emily Cook

August 21, 1916July 6, 2018

Mildred “Millie” Emily Cook passed away peacefully in her room at St. Augustine Plantation on July 6, 2018 in Tallahassee, FL at the age of 101 (six weeks shy of her 102nd birthday).

Millie was born on August 21, 1916 in Ripon, WI to Louis H. Schultz and Dora Johanna Duehring. She attended Ripon College, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Theta Sorority. She then entered the U.S. Navy on May 17, 1943 as a Pharmacist Mate Second Class during WWII. During her service, she met her husband, Joe Power Cook, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard. They were married on October 15, 1946 in Florida. Millie and Joe enjoyed traveling and shared a great sense of humor that spread to everyone around them. On March 5th, 1957, the couple welcomed their son, Dale Cook, into their home. Millie worked at the Florida Bar and enjoyed gardening and embroidery. She passed down her cooking skills and recipes to her son, Dale. Her family always looked forward to her cooking, especially her German dishes and German chocolate cake (which her son and granddaughters would request for every birthday). In her later life, she belonged to Tallahassee Memorial Auxiliary and Epiphany Quilting and Sharing group. She enjoyed her social life, reading, singing, and spending time with her family. Her two granddaughters share an abundance of fond and loving memories as she was a great presence and influence in their lives.

Millie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dale Cook and Melissa Starbuck of Crawfordville, FL; granddaughters Carin Brown (Phillip J.) and Sarah Cook of Tallahassee, FL. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Power Cook.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, July 11th at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Tallahassee. Millie loved flowers; floral tributes may be sent to Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home (700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, 32312). Or, donations in her memory may be sent to Epiphany Lutheran Church (8300 Deerlake Road, Tallahassee, 32312).

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Augustine Plantation and Big Bend Hospice for their attentive care.
