Mildred Reid Hall

It was in the fullness of time, June 27, 1935, Mildred Reid Hall was destined to be born as a servant to mankind. Her roots humbly began in Sanford, Florida. Mildred’s early years were spent in St. Augustine and Jacksonville, Florida. Later matriculating to Tallahassee, Florida, she completed her last two years of high school at the Florida A&M University Developmental Research School (DRS). Mildred was one of four children: Mattie Clayton, Eugene Clayton and Ella Mae White, each preceded her in death. On July 20, 2026, at the age of 91 years old, Mildred peacefully passed into eternity.

At an early age, Mildred, a woman of faith and a devout believer, accepted the Holy Bible as the inspired word of truth. She was a member of St. Peters Anglican Cathedral where she faithfully participated in the sacraments and attended worship services which were central to her life.

In 1965, Mildred graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Upon graduation, Mildred’s nursing career began as a registered nurse at the historic Florida A & M University Hospital. With her nursing career spanning several years, Mildred additionally worked as a Registered Nurse at Archbold Hospital in Thomasville, Georgia.

Mildred was united in holy matrimony to Robert Hall, the former Comptroller/Chief Financial Officer and Head of Accounting for Florida A&M University. He preceded her in death.

Passionate about education, Mildred received State of Florida Department of Education Teacher Certification in Biology. She taught Biology at James S. Rickards High School and Lincoln High School. During that time, Mildred continued her educational pursuits to receive a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the Florida State University which provided advanced possibilities for leadership. Mildred’s service to Leon County Schools led to an appointment as Science Coordinator (teacher on special assignment). Her passion for public educators in Leon County led Mildred to join Leon Classroom Teachers Association. Mildred held a dual role, voted by her contemporaries, as the president of the Leon Classroom Teachers Association (LCTA), taking an active role in local education advocacy, teacher contracts and labor negotiations 1980 -1990.

Mildred’s education career advanced to include educational leadership which led to being appointed to administrative roles including assistant principal at Griffin Middle School (1994-1996) and Amos P. Godby High School (1996-1998), both in Tallahassee, Florida. Further executive service to Leon County Schools afforded Mildred the opportunity to serve notably as the Coordinator of Safe and Drugfree Schools, where she managed grant writing initiatives, regional programs and drug-free schools’ initiatives. Her unique degrees and vast skill set positioned Mildred to work closely with state officials while simultaneously appointed as Director of Health Services for the district. Mildred had a statewide educational footprint. She was chosen to represent Leon County on state-level educational committees to establish guidelines, including serving on committees alongside other Florida administrators and school psychologists to update student support frameworks. Mildred retired from Leon County Schools June 30, 2002.

Activism began early in Mildred’s life as she became a Member of the Student Nurses Association and the Student Women's Council. Mildred was civic-minded and committed to serving her community through organizations which allowed her opportunities to impact the lives of her “neighbors.” In 1977, Mildred was inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Delta Kappa Omega Chapter. Additionally, Mildred held memberships in: Phi Delta Kappa Sorority (1987 Florida State University), Capital City Democratic Women’s Club, and Episcopal Church Women.

For decades of organizing and serving as an executive committee member of the Capital City Democratic Women’s Club, Mildred’s tireless service was valued and critical to issues her community faced. At the state level, Mildred held membership and executive offices in the Democratic Women's Club of Florida (DWFC Region I Chairperson of the Florida Panhandle). In 2015, after having served the organization in multiple executive roles since 1977, Mildred received a Lifetime Membership Award at the Democratic Women's Club of Florida (DWFC) Statewide Convention in Cocoa Beach, FL. Mildred’s footprint in Tallahassee and Leon County encompassed political and prominent community activism. She became a major regional political figure, running for supervisor of elections in Leon County. Mildred met presidents, senators, and governors, worked on campaigns, initiated fundraisers, chartered new Clubs, mentored incoming leadership, and organized galas. In culminating an illustrious career in politics, Mildred resigned her positions as DWCF Region I Chair and DWCF Chair of Region Chairs at the state level.

Mildred’s community governance expanded through municipal appointments, being named by the City of Tallahassee Commission to serve on public civic advisory boards, including the Tallahassee/Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls. Mildred was a member of Golden Eagle Golf & Country Club Homes Association and a member of the Golden Eagle Ladies Club.

Mildred’s legacy will continue to live through her children whom she dearly loved: Avery Roberts – son (Beverly Hills, CA); Dr. Dianne Avery Wright – daughter (Ft. Lauderdale, FL); Michael Edwin (Tracey) Avery – son (Atlanta, GA); and grandsons: Bryant Avery (Knoxville, TN); Jacob Avery (Atlanta, GA); Patricia Clayton – niece (Jacksonville, FL); and Randy (Julie) White – nephew (Jacksonville, FL).
