

Monroe Fletcher, beloved husband and father, passed away at home on December 7th, surrounded by loved ones. Born on December 30, 1917 in Havana, Florida to William Foster Fletcher and Anna Goodwin Beggs, he was the third of 6 children. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Laverne Cash Fletcher; daughter Nancy Fletcher (Wayne Drummond); daughter Peggy Pfenninger (Gregory); son Stuart E. Fletcher; grand-daughters Lisa Pfenninger , Emma Drummond and Sarah Drummond. He is predeceased by brothers W.F. Fletcher, Jr. and Stuart Fletcher; sisters Mary Frances Luttrell and Emily Ellerbee. His surviving sister is Beulah Boozer. A Leon High School graduate (1936), he served during WWII as a Staff Sergeant for the 30th Air Service Squadron for the Army Air Forces, predominately stationed in Australia. After WWII, he attended Georgia Tech on the GI Bill. He married Laverne in 1946 and returned to Tallahassee to work as a Bridge Engineer for the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT). He retired in 1982 as the Assistant Engineer of Structures. A notable project during his tenure was the bridge replacements in the Overseas Highway to Key West. After retirement he worked for two local PE firms. Fully retired at the age of 80, he enjoyed pursuing his passions for music, history, gardening, fishing and the outdoors. An active member of Lafayette Presbyterian Church he was a choir member for 48 years. He was a happy man who had a smile on his lips and a song in his heart.
Special thanks go to his caregivers, especially Melissa Tolar, and the staff at Big Bend Hospice for their professional yet compassionate care. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 17 (1pm visitation, 2pm service) at Culley’s MeadowWood Chapel on Timberlane Rd. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lafayette Presbyterian Church, Big Bend Hospice or any organization which benefits the environment or wildlife.
