Mrs. Burt earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University; a Master of Arts degree from MacMurray College in Illinois; and a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University.
Her life’s work was that of a psychologist and an educator. She was a certified school psychologist and counselor; national certified counselor; and a Florida licensed psychologist. Her career began as an English teacher at Niles Township High School in Skokie, Illinois (1957-1959). She went on to become a school counselor and psychologist at Maine Township High School in Park Ridge, Illinois (1960-1963). After moving to Tallahassee in 1963, Mrs. Burt was hired as an English instructor at Florida State University, where she served for seven years, ultimately being promoted to assistant professor (1963-1965).
The crown jewel of her career was the role she played for more than 30 years at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, first as an associate professor (1970-1975), then as director of the career development center (1975—2001), and as director of the teacher education center (1982-1992), until she retired as full professor in 2001. She continued on the faculty as professor emeritus until recent years when her health would no longer allow her to climb the “highest of seven hills” germane to FAMU. It was only befitting that Mrs. Burt be named “Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Educator of the Century.” She also was an adjunct professor for the Center for Biblical Studies and attended Lafayette Presbyterian Church, in Tallahassee.
Mrs. Burt is survived by her sister, Joeann Vesecky of Shell Point Beach in Crawfordville, Florida; special cousin, Jeanette Palm (James) of White Springs, Florida; and two special nephews: David Lee and John Reeves of Tallahassee, Florida. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Anna Pav, and by her husband, Jesse W. Burt.
A memorial service will be held at Lafayette Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 25th at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Florida A&M University Foundation in memory of Mrs. Nancy Burt.
