Nomie Jean (Lott) Hamm passed away at her Tallahassee home on Monday, November 14, 2011.
Nomie was born in Williston, South Carolina, on March 10, 1929 to George Burnham Lott and Naomi Claymon Lott. In 1949, after the Lotts moved to Bartow, Florida, Nomie married Clifton Cleveland Hamm, Jr. While Cleve pursued a long and distinguished career in journalism at The Tampa Tribune, The (Lakeland) Ledger and Beaumont (Tx.) Enterprise, Nomie was a piano teacher and teacher’s aide; together they raised two children, and were married for nearly 35 years until Cleve’s untimely death from cancer in 1984, with Nomie at his side.
Nomie was happiest when she was taking care of others, particularly her children and grandchildren. She especially loved the Holidays, because the family would gather to enjoy the wonderful Southern food she would cook. She was greatly loved and will be missed by all.
Nomie is survived by daughter, Rebecca Jean “Becky” Hilliard and her daughters Amy and Allison Hilliard; son, George Clifton “Tony” Hamm (Maria), and their children, Paul (Ana), Mollie and Alex, all of Tallahassee; her brother, George Burnham Lott, Jr. sister-in-law Lois Lott, of Holmes Beach and their children, Barry (Roxanne) Lott and Melissa (Rob) Jordan of Orlando; brother-in-law, Joseph C. (Sue) Hamm of Mulberry; and a host of cousins, great- nieces and nephews, and special friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday, November 17, 2011 from 4 pm to 6 pm at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida, to reminiscence about Nomie Jean, Nana and Mom.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity or the Cleve Hamm Scholarship Fund at the University of Florida, College of Journalism and Communications, 1080 Weimer Hall, P.O. Box 118400, Gainesville, Florida 32611-8400.
