Nora Louise Roddenberry

Nora Louise Edwards Roddenberry, known lovingly to so many as “Nonnie,” lived a life deeply rooted in faith, family, and grace. She was a godly woman whose quiet strength, warmth, and selfless devotion reflected the heart of Christ in all she did. Her presence brought peace, her words brought comfort, and her love created a home and legacy that will forever touch the lives of those who knew her.

Louise was born on November 25, 1936, in Bristol, Florida, to the late Joseph and Myrtle Edwards. Soon after, her family moved to Sopchoppy, Florida. A proud graduate of Sopchoppy High School, Louise married her high school sweetheart, Samuel Lee Roddenberry, on April 13, 1958. Their marriage spanned 65 years, a true inspiration to everyone around them.

Early in her career, Louise worked for the State of Florida Motor Vehicle Commission. After starting her family, her calling to care for others led her to pursue her dream in healthcare. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida State University in the spring of 1976. Although she later reflected that she had always aspired to be a doctor—noting that "women were mostly nurses back then"—she took deep pride in nursing and served with exceptional skill, empathy, and devotion.

When Sam’s engineering career relocated the family to South Florida, Louise volunteered in an elementary school clinic before working as an Occupational Nurse for Westinghouse Corporation. Back home, she poured her heart into her three children—coaching cheerleading teams, washing endless athletic uniforms, and never missing a game, performance, or school milestone.

After retiring from nursing in 1994, Louise and Sam returned to Tallahassee, where she stepped fully into her most treasured role: "Nonnie." She helped raise her grandchildren day after day while her daughter worked, standing by for every doctor's appointment, school program, and eventually graduations, and weddings. Her home was a sanctuary filled with love, the taste of her famous grilled cheese sandwiches, the soft scent of her Happy perfume, and a kitchen famously stocked with red Gatorade and Fruit Roll-Ups.

Summers at their St. George Island home were among her happiest days, creating memories of beach trips and simple joy that her family carries with them still. The island held such deep significance that her eldest grandchild, Sarah, chose to marry there to honor Nonnie's legacy of love. In her later years, Louise demonstrated the ultimate depth of that love by serving as Sam’s devoted caretaker for over a decade.

Louise lived nearly 90 years—a gift that allowed her to welcome and hold her great-grandchildren. Her life stood as a living example of Proverbs 31:26 - "She opens her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness."

Louise now joins in eternal rest her beloved husband, Sam, and her dear brothers, Robert Jack Edwards (JoAnn) and Clinton “Bully” Edwards (Arie), who preceded her in death. Together again, she and Sam continue their love story in Heaven as beautifully as it began on Earth.

She is survived by her three children: Samuel Stanley “Stan” Roddenberry, Bryan Shelton Roddenberry (Angela), and Suzanne Leigh Roddenberry Wilkinson (Ben); her grandchildren: Sarah Elizabeth Palowitch (Brendon), Alexa Nicole Louise Roddenberry, Samuel Moffitt Roddenberry (Natalie), Michael Anthony Roberts III "Trey” (Elisabet), Taylor Leigh Roddenberry, and Brooke Elizabeth Roddenberry; and her great-grandchildren: Kendall Leigh Palowitch, Charlotte Carolyn Roddenberry, and Matthew Bennett Roberts.

Nonnie was also blessed with six beloved bonus grandchildren and great-grandchild: Benjamin Hooper Wilkinson III “Hooper” (Olivia), Collins Elizabeth Wilkinson, Sutton Katherine Wilkinson, Haines Johnson Layfield III “Trey”, Jordan Kendall Layfield, Madison Irene Bryan (Joshua), Henry Elliot Bryan, and Mason Gerard Layfield.

She is remembered with great affection by her brothers- and sisters-in-law: Jamie and Pat Roddenberry of Tallahassee, Mark (deceased) and Yvette Roddenberry of Crawfordville, Barbara "Babs" (her best friend) and Frank Chase of Tallahassee, Mike and Jayne Roddenberry of Crawfordville, and Harold and Elizabeth "Betty" Barwick (deceased) of Tallahassee; alongside a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who adored their Aunt Louise.

In her final weeks, she reminded us that spending time with her grandchildren and watching them grow into adults was "the greatest joy of my life." We hold those words close, knowing that our sweet mother and Nonnie will forever be the greatest joy of ours.

A graveside service celebrating the life of Nora Louise Edwards Roddenberry will be held at West Sopchoppy Cemetery on October 12, 2026, at 10:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to Sopchoppy Southern Baptist Church.
