

Prior to his Army Career, he served two years in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II having served in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and South Pacific War Zones. In addition to serving with the Army in Japan, Okinawa and Panama, he served two tours in Korea during the war there as an Infantry Platoon Sergeant and a tour in Korea and one in Vietnam as a Counterintelligence Special Agent. His last Army assignment was as the Operations Sergeant Major of the elite 902nd Military Intelligence Group in Falls Church, Virginia.
From the age of 10 until his passing, he had a great interest in Football, Baseball, Softball and Basketball, as a player, coach an umpire or referee and a spectator. As an Umpire or Referee, he claimed to have never missed a call; however, he claimed to have mispronounced some calls. While stationed in Okinawa and in Baltimore, Maryland with the Army he served as a Baseball Scout with the Houston Astros Major League Baseball Team.
After retiring from the Army, he lived in Arlington, Virginia where he was employed as the Executive Vice President of the International Tariff Services , in Washington D.C. After his retirement from International Tariff Services in Arlington, Virginia, he delivered Meals on Wheels for six years. He relocated to Tallahassee, Florida in 2003 where he delivered Meals on Wheels, was a Hospice Volunteer and transported Cancer Patients to the Hospital for treatment. He was a member of the Army Counterintelligence Veterans, Inc., the Disabled Veterans Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was preceded in death by his late wife of 59 years, Dorothy Wardrop Helman of Tallahassee, FL, his sister Jean Newton of Falls Church, VA, his parents Blaine and Frances Strong Helman and a brother Edwin all of Indiana, PA, He is survived by his wife Annette Lee Shields Helman of Tallahassee, FL, a son Donald L. Helman Sr. of Brandon, FL, a son Terry P. Helman of Marysville, WA, a daughter Sandra Durrant of Lloyd, FL, a step son Gregory Shields (Melanie) of Havana, FL, a step son Van Shields (Beth) of Tallahassee, FL and a step daughter Pamela Shields Harris (Jeff) of Monticello, FL, twelve grandchildren, three great grandsons and a great granddaughter. His survivors believe when he enters Heaven, he will have at least three jokes and two stories for St. Peter.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Generations Church 3080 W Tennessee St. Tallahassee.
