Robert "Sonny" Leo Pursell Jr.

October 10,1950 - December 26, 2022

Robert Leo Pursell, Jr., 72 years old departed his earthly journey peacefully with his family by his side on December 26, 2022.

He was born in Pensacola, Florida in 1950. He was a graduate of Pensacola High School in 1969 where he excelled playing football and baseball. He continued his education and football career at Troy University graduating with a bachelor degree in accounting. While at Troy University he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.

Sonny is survived by his wife of 51 years Sheila Chavis Pursell who was his high school sweetheart and the love of his life; son and daughter-in-law, Alvin Chavis “Chad” and Amanda Pursell; grandchildren Brodie and Byrce Avery Pursell who were his pride and joy; sisters, Patricia Pursell Strength, Andalusia, Alabama, Cynthia Kay Pursell Cherry and Cheryl Faye (Dan) Kenan, Pensacola, Florida, sisters-in-law Dee Chavis Barlow Pensacola,Florida and Alvina (Bill) Dorton, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Leo and Grace Frank Pursell and brothers, Carl O’Brien and David Frank Pursell.

Sonny is remembered by his family and friends for his love of coaching, photography, bike riding, vacations with his family and watching his grandchildren in their many activities and with his camera making videos and photographs of them. He is remembered most of all for making friends wherever he went and continuing those friendships throughout his life because each friendship was precious and valued by him.

Sonny’s faith, physical health prior to his disease and his tenacity to live life defied all medical diagnosis, baffled his medical team and amazed his family and friends with how he lived battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Sonny lived every moment of each day of his life to the fullest and uplifted everyone around him because his zest for living was contagious.

Sonny’s life for all of us is a blueprint on how to live life fully during difficult times and through faith to be not only happy but have contentment, joy and peace. A public visitation will be held at Northwoods Church at 12:00pm prior to the service. The Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00PM Northwoods Church, 3762 Capital Cir. NW, Tallahassee. FL32303.
