Harry graduated from Texas A&M University where he served as Corps Chaplain and was a member of the “Singing Cadets”. After graduation, he attended Duke Divinity School where he received his Masters of Divinity and met fellow student Mary Catherine Freeman. They married on August 19, 1957, over 68 years ago.
After completing his education, he served in the United States Air Force as a Chaplain during which time he and Mary Catherine started their family. After his discharge, he served as pastor in a local United Methodist church in Olympia, Washington. The family eventually landed in Sarasota, Florida where he owned and ran his own business, Quality Screening and Window Repair, for more than 30 years.
Harry was also an avid beekeeper, a hobby he started when he and Mary Catherine were first married. He kept bees for 50 years and sold the honey under the name of “Three Queen Honey” after their 3 daughters.
He loved the hymns of the church and his joy could be felt by all those around him as he sang. He was a warm presence and when asked how he was doing, would often respond “Better, now that I’ve seen you” while also declaring you to be the “Best of the Best”. Even in his final days, those who cared for him found his positivity to be inspiring.
Harry is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine and their three daughters: Karen Lewis (and her husband, Mike) of Orlando, FL; Elizabeth Swider of Charlottesville, VA; and Cindy Strickland (and her husband, Tim) of Tallahassee, FL; as well as his three grandchildren: Andrew Lewis, Ben Strickland and Tyler Strickland.
A service honoring his life will be held at Deerlake Church (8013 Deerlake Road Tallahassee, FL 32312) on Tuesday, February 10th at 10am.
