
Mr. Ronald James Harrell, of Tallahassee, Florida, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away Sunday, May 13, after several years of declining health.
He was born December 1, 1941 in Dade City, Florida, where he spent his youth. In high school Ron was an outstanding athlete in both football and baseball. After graduating from Pasco High School in 1960, he joined the Marine Corps and completed training at Parris Island, as a member of the 1st Amphibian Tractor Battalion. He continued in the Marine Reserves until 1967, and was always extremely proud of his years of service in the Marine Corps. After leaving the Marines he traveled to Italy to work in the winemaking industry. Upon his return home he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at Saint Leo University. He began his professional career with the Division of Youth Services and later transferred to the Florida Parole Commission where he continued until his retirement in 2003. Ron was a member of the Capital Lions Club where he served in many offices including club president. In retirement he spent many hours teaching his grandson, Harrison, who was so eager to learn from his "Gan". They shared a passion for military history, especially WWII.
Ron is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Barbara; daughter and son- in -law, Ashley and Paul DeGuire; and grandson Harrison, all of Tallahassee; and brother, Dr. George Harrell, of Grimesland, North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Winston and Oris Harrell; and brothers, John and Don Harrell.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 18 from 1-2 pm at Culley's Meadowood Chapel, on Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida. A graveside service will follow at 2pm. Reverend Andrew DeGuire will lead services.
All who knew Ron will remember him as a very loving and giving man who was totally devoted to his family. He will be greatly missed!
