Roy Hurst Barber

Roy Hurst Barber, 103, of Tallahassee, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at his residence. Born on June 3, 1915 in Centerville, Alabama, he was the son of the late Carlton Alfred Barber and Ophelia Hurst Barber.

Roy was a graduate of Leon High School and attended the University of Florida. Roy worked for many years as a locksmith with the Bureau of Prisons, at the Tallahassee Federal Prison. A veteran of World War II, Roy served in the US Navy aboard the USS Conklin DE 439. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and the VFW and had a passion for the outdoors and conservation.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine C. Barber, whom he married on December 9, 1936. Roy was also preceded in death by his daughter, Mabel Eugenia Hinson.

Roy is survived by his grandchildren, Donald R. Hinson (Nell); Daniel W. Hinson (Myong); Janet E. Pate (Delane) and Elizabeth E. Gregory.

A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home on Riggins Road. Graveside Funeral Services will follow at 12:30 PM at Oakland Cemetery in Tallahassee.
