She was born in Norfolk Virginia on July 24, 1938. She attended school in Norfolk and continued to live there until she met the love of her life Ervin E. “Gene” Gavins while he was stationed in Virginia while serving in the Army. They were married on November 28, 1958 and soon moved to Tallahassee where they would live for the rest of their lives.
Sally was a beacon of happiness who loved life and made everyone around her better for knowing her. She worked for over 30 years at Florida State University retiring from there in 2001. She was the world’s best Mom, loved her horses, golf, boating and traveling with her family. She was an expert gardener, butterfly wrangler, hummingbird feeder and lover of all things in nature.
She is survived by her son Benjamin L. “Rocky” Gavins and his wife Sandra Gavins; one grandson Benjamin L. “Ben” Gavins II and his wife Alexandra Gavins; a sister Shelley Parker and her husband Richard Parker; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Sally was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Gene Gavins; her parents James C. Hyatt and Virginia B. Hyatt, and her brothers Steve Hyatt and Jimmy Hyatt.
There will be a gathering of family and friends on December 20, 2022 at 5:00 pm, at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308
