On the morning of August 3, 2026, at 7:01 a.m., Samuel "Sam" Keith Hunter was welcomed home into the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ. Sam was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, and loyal friend.
Born on June 1, 1960 in Tallahassee, Florida, Sam grew up in a large family, he learned early on to value what truly mattered. Sam attended and graduated from Godby High School. He was a simple, hardworking man who kept his word, spoke only the truth, and loved to laugh. Above all, he cherished his family and friends. Whether you knew Sam for decades or just met him once, he had a way of making you feel welcome with his easy laughter and smile. He had a calm disposition, a gentle kindness, and a big heart.
In 2022, he retired from the City of Tallahassee after 30 years of dedicated service as a foreman and heavy equipment operator. While these titles reflect his hard work, they only begin to scratch the surface of who he truly was. To know Sam was to know an honest, genuinely good man.
In his earlier years, Sam was hunter and fisherman. Over time, his relationship with nature shifted, and the deer he once hunted became his daily-fed pets. Sam loved all animals and shared a special bond with his emotional support dog, Sassy Mae, who was always by his side and misses him dearly.
Following his retirement, Sam found joy in life’s simplest pleasures. He was incredibly proud of his citrus trees, and on most days, you could find him walking his yard with a cup of coffee in hand, looking up in the sky watching the clouds hoping for a thunderstorm. He loved being outdoors, rain or shine.
Sam’s greatest love was his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Don and Clara Hunter, and his brother, Jimmy Hunter. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy and is survived by his loving wife Michelle of 36 years, who cared for him during his illness and was by his side until the very end. His son, Tra Hunter (Denna); daughter, Cassie Dull, whom he raised from the age of three. He is also survived by his brothers, Donnie (Margaret), Steve Hunter (Gail), and Mike Hunter; his sisters, Diane Hartsfield (Ronnie) and Lisa Hunter Brandon; his four cherished grandchildren, Kamryn Cobb, Capri Hunter, Roman Hunter, and Siena Hunter; alongside a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Though our hearts are heavy with Sam's passing, we find great comfort in knowing his love, laughter, and beautiful memories will remain with us always. His legacy will live on through everyone blessed enough to know him.
He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
A Memorial service will be held 2 PM, Saturday, August 29, 2026 at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32308.
