Thomas Michael Lonchar Sr. was born in New York City on November 5, 1938. Throughout his childhood he frequented the wonderful museums the city had to offer. His playground was Central Park West. When he was a teenager he rode his bicycle around the city as a delivery boy. He actually delivered laundry to Marlon Brando one day! His childhood dream was to join the military. He enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 18.
Tom received years of electronics as well as computer training while in the military. He worked on the famous Sage System as a radar bomb scorer. Of the many different locations he was stationed Guam was one of his favorites. He spent his free time snorkeling among the reefs in the evenings. He collected beautiful seashells on the island.
Tom devoted 12 years of his life to the Air Force. He achieved rank of Staff Sargeant. After leaving the military he took on several different computer related positions.
In 1978 Tom met Barbara Siren. After a whirlwind romance the two were wed. They had two children named Jennifer and Thomas Jr.
He eventually worked for the Florida Legislature and was the technology purchaser for them up until his retirement. After several years of retirement he returned to the workforce under the Florida Department of Children and Families. He was manager of the computer tape library in the Northwood Centre.
Tom had a passion for sailing. He would sail throughout the Bahamas as well as off the coast of Shell Point. Barbara and Tom traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean on Carnival Cruise Lines.
Tom had a love for his country, family, and friends. He had numerous health issues in recent years but he never complained. He was a real trooper and always had a smile and positive attitude.
Tom and Barbara's marriage was a strong one lasting 43 years. They were hoping to reach the 50th wedding anniversary. Sadly, Tom passed before that milestone could be reached.
Tom leaves behind his wife Barbara and their children Jennifer and Thomas. He also leaves behind Vicky and David(Susie Malkemus) from a previous marriage. Other survivors include his two nephews Vincent and Joseph and their parents William and Betty Dewar. Not to be forgotten his brother-in-law Joseph Siren and close family friends.
Special thanks is to be given for the wonderful care Betty Dewar provided in his final days. Also, to the entire Big Bend Hospice team that was there for the Lonchar family.
