Vernon Carl Huff, Jr., 79, transcended this world to be with his Lord in Heaven on October 29, 2012, surrounded by his loving family in Tallahassee, Florida.
Carl was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Tallahassee, Florida, and previously a longtime deacon at Parkway Baptist Church. He also served as Youth Pastor at First Baptist Church, Leesburg, Florida. He graduated from Florida State University in 1978 with a Master's Degree in Public Administration and was an Adjunct Professor of Gerontology. While attending the University of Florida, he was initiated into the Alpha Tau Omega National Fraternity and was a member of the University's Student Executive Council. A Florida native, raised in central Florida, a Registered Land Surveyor No. 1893, he retired in 1991 from the Florida Department of Transportation after 33 years of service. During his career he worked on the construction of Alligator Alley, Airport Expressway, and Palmetto Bypass in Miami, served as Chief-of-Survey Parties in Palm Beach County, and District Traffic Engineer in Deland. After moving to Tallahassee he served as Supervisor of Urban Transportation Studies; Legislative Liaison; Staff Director for High Speed Rail Committee; Executive Director Florida Transportation Disadvantaged Commission; Coordinator Florida Keys Bridges Restoration Study; Staff Administrator Florida Transportation Commission; member of the National Transportation Needs Study Taskforce and member of the U.S. National Transportation Research Board. Carl's final work assignment was Executive Assistant to the State of Florida Secretary of Transportation in Tallahassee.
Carl was a member of the Florida National Guard, "lettered" in three sports at Leesburg High School (football, basketball and track), was a Boy Scout, Civil Air Patrol cadet, spear fisherman, and water skier. He was a frequent golfer at Hilaman Park Golf Course, and for several seasons he played AAU basketball for the Kane Patch Bar.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 2, 2012, at 12:00 Noon at Culley's MeadowWood Chapel on Timberlane Road. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 2351 Mahan Drive, Tallahassee, Florida 32308.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Delma "Tim" and Vernon Huff, Sr.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Marilyn; son, Vernon Carl Huff III, Orlando, Florida; daughter, Janet Carleen Blaum (Bill), Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania; daughter, Leigh Ann Harris (Ray) Birmingham, Alabama; a loving sister, Rosemary White, Tallahassee, Florida; step brother, Frank Saggus, Orlando, Florida; and grandchildren, Tyler, Savannah and Eva Blaum and Georgia Rae, Caleb and Cooper Harris.
Arrangements are under the direction of Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home in Tallahassee, Florida.
