

Born April 12, 1938 in his family’s ancestral home in Guangdong Province, China, Winston was the firstborn son of a prominent Chinese historian and his wife. In 1949, his family moved to Hong Kong, where Winston grew up and graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1962. He received a PhD in history from Harvard University in 1970. In 1967, he and his new bride Ann moved to Tallahassee, where he taught Asian history at Florida State University for 36 years, retiring in 2003 as Professor Emeritus of History. A born-again Christian for over 70 years, he was a founding member of Tallahassee Chinese Christian Church and was most recently a member of Atlanta Baptist Chinese Church.
Winston was preceded in death by his parents Prof. Hsiang-lin Lo and Tan Chu; by his brother Dr. James Lo; and by his beloved wife of 53 years Ann Lee-on Hsu, with whom he is reunited in heaven. He is survived by his sons Michael and Jonathan; daughter-in-law Jennifer; and his beloved grandchildren Juliana and Johnny. He leaves behind his siblings Rev. Moses Lo and Prof. Esther Ng; sisters-in-law Linda Lo and Vicky Lo; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and their families.
A public visitation will be held on May 16, 2026, from 10:00am to 11:00am at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312, followed immediately by the funeral service from 11:00am to 12:00pm. The burial will take place at 12:00pm at Culley’s MeadowWood Memorial Park, with a gathering for family and friends to follow. The funeral service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend.
