William Lentner Furlong

Bill was born in New Orleans, LA, and raised in Birmingham, AL. He earned a B.S. degree from the University of Alabama. Following his service in the U.S. Navy he earned an M.B.A.degree from City University of New York while working in the International Division of General Electric Company and simultaneously graduating from G.E.s three year Professional Business Management Program. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Alabama, he taught accounting at the University of Alabama, Emory University, University of Georgia, Georgia State University (full professor), Duke University (guest lecturer) and Florida State University (adjunct). He also worked for Grant Thornton Certified Public Accountants in Atlanta, GA, was Chief Accountant at Jack Eckerd Corporation, St. Petersburg, FL, and V.P. of Finance at Drug King in Los Angeles, CA. He was a Certified Public Accountant and in 1974 he established his own public accounting firm in Tallahassee. He was a member and past president of the Tallahassee chapter of the Florida Institute of C.P.A.s. and a former member of the Tallahassee Lions Club. He enjoyed international travel and his weekly golf game and lunch with the “fruit cup” gang.

He is still cherished by his wife of 50 years, Jane Powell Furlong; son, William Furlong (Dianne Jessie) of Orlando, FL; and daughter, Margaret Beaudry (Patrick) of Winston-Salem, N.C. He was a loving and fun grandpa to Rebecca and Benjamin Beaudry and Ella Jean Jessie Furlong. Also surviving are a sister, Mitzi Lisby (Floyd); nieces, Linda Gardner, Christy Myer; and nephew, Don Roberts, Birmingham, AL; and “chosen” family, Pamela Manley and Charlotte Curtis.

Bill will be cremated and the interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pilot Club of Tallahassee Foundation, Inc. c/o Belinda Mizell at Regions Bank.

A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Tuesday, July10, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road (850) 877-8191. During that time refreshments and lite food fare will be available to all.
