
William I. Roaten, 94, of Tallahassee, FL passed away at Big Bend Hospice on Monday, December 30, 2019. He was born in Newport News, VA on February 1, 1925. He was the only child of the late William I. and Margaret (Williams) Roaten.
Early on, his music education was interrupted by World War II. As a part of the “Greatest Generation,” he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific in the Battles of Saipan and Tinian. He was in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the peace treaty with Japan on the “Mighty MO.” He remained in the Navy Reserve and was recalled during the Korean Conflict.
He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Dorothy (Hutchison) Roaten; daughter, Nancy R. Bishop, of Tallahassee, FL; son, Douglas Glen Roaten and his wife, Dawn Zill Roaten, of Charlotte, NC., and granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Bishop, of Tallahassee, FL.
He will be remembered as a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. In keeping with his wishes, no formal services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made to your choice of charity.
Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. A private interment with Military Honors will be held at the Tallahassee National Cemetery at a later date.
