Al lived 66 years filled with love, adventure, hard work, and fun. He was raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, attended Piper High School, and went on to serve his country in the Armed Forces. After his honorable discharge, he enjoyed a career as a bus driver for Broward County Transit. Al was known to greet passengers with warmth and a beautiful smile. When Al left Broward County Transit, he took over the family business McNeill Hotel & Grocery in Carver Ranches, Florida.
More than anything, Al was a devoted family man and loyal friend. He was never too busy to show up for those he loved, and he always made space in his life for family reunions, graduations, parties, and simple conversations. Al was an avid checker player—some would say a legend—and was affectionately called “Hollywood” by those who sat across the checkerboard from him. Another passion of Al’s was fishing—he always caught a fish “this big” that no one else had seen or photographed. But in true Al spirit, he always shared the fish he caught. His sense of humor was unparalleled, and it often shined when he was sitting at the card table talking smack against his opponent. His energy was electric, and people loved him.
Al was preceded in death by his mother Sennie Mae Simmons, father Willie Junior McNeil (Cadillac), sisters Annie Harris and Sylvia Simmons, and brothers James Willie McNeill and Timothy McNeil.
Al is survived by his wife Sharon; sons Kevin Frazier and Ezekiel Scott; daughter Giselle Nicely, siblings Jeremiah Scott (Kendra), Michelle Weaver (D’Andre), Tyrone Simmons (Pamela), Pastor Patricia McMillian (Howard dec.), Larry McNeill (Treva), Leo Graham (Carla), Betty Symonette, George Graham, Harriet McNeil Moore (Bob), and O’Jetter Smalls; grandson KeAndre Frazier; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends who he held in his heart as family.
