Anfernee made his great entrance into the world on May 7th, 1996. There was much joy and happiness as the young parents, Zelma Thomas and Albert Grant Jr. welcomed their bundle of joy. What excitement and jubilation in the family’s home on the tiny island of Grand Turk that day, as the family received not one but double blessings. The twins were lovingly named Anfernee and Anfernae Grant.
Anfernee spent his short life between the Turks and Caicos Islands and the United States. He enjoyed the travel because it presented an opportunity for him to meet, bond with and love his large family. Anfernee loved his family and was assured of their affection for him. To his family he was affectionately known as Dunks and his close friends and others also called him Smokey or Smiley.
Growing up, Anfernee made many magnificent memories, some of which were hanging out with his cousins Tevin, Tavano and Aaron Ramsey, Rodston Malik Darronic and Kirk Jr. Some of our fondest memories are of Dunks sneaking into his Aunty Sho’s vehicle on a Friday afternoon or the last day of school and never returning home to his parents until the day before school opens. This was indeed a testament of his love for his family.
He often visited his grandmother (now deceased) on special occasions or holidays they both shared a special bond. No doubt he was her favourite. He protected her and her belongings and he would offer to give her money once leaving to go back to Provo. I can recall one time he gave her $1.00 when asked why he only gave $1 he said because he had no change. Usually, he would leave $10 with her both him and his twin sister.
Anfernee commenced his early education at Whole Gospel Christian Academy in Providenciales, he was so smart in school that the principal allowed him to take the entrance test for high school a year ahead of time and he passed. After his mother moved to the United States, he also followed joining her in Florida. There he completed his middle school and begun high school education: at Westpine Middle and Piper High school where he made history as a student obtaining F in PE, simply because he had refused to wear the Pickle uniform as he called it. In 2013 after his Mom gained employment with American Airlines he relocated again to Fort Walton Beach Florida, where he graduated from Choctawhatchee High School.
After High School, he decided to take a gap year that turn into gap years and moved back to Providenciales to live with his father to work. While on his break he worked several jobs but his favourite was a Beach and Pool Attendant at the West Bay Club. To him, this didn’t feel like a job as he enjoyed interacting with the guest and doing something that gave him pleasure.
During this time he rediscovered the passion he had his whole life, to be a pilot. This became a reality when Anfernee was accepted into the Pelican Flight Training Program, he received financial assistance from the Turks and Caicos Government and pursued his dream in October 2021. He moved back to Florida in order to earn his pilot license. Those were the best days of his life and he had a future full of dreams, goals and ambitions.
On August 11, 2022 the tragic news of Anfernee’s demise came like a shocking wave upon his family and friends. We miss him dearly and mourn his loss, gone too soon and cut off like a candle in the wind!
