She was born in Winona, Minnesota, on June 7, 1923, to Charles and Anna Fischer. She was predeceased by her brothers, Carl and Anthony, and sisters, Marian and Gertrude. Elayne is survived by her sister, Betty, and sister-in-law Lois Fischer, numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Elayne passed from this world on February 17, 2022.
Elayne loved her “Two T’s”. Teaching and travel.
She earned both Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in Business Education and completed the academic requirements for a Ph.D. Elayne loved teaching principles and the application of accounting, finance, and commerce to her upper-level high school students. But her greater love was seeing them pursue careers that were unimaginable to them before taking her courses. For 31.5 years, she taught in New York. Elayne never married, but her classroom and students were her home and children.
Elayne traveled, literally, around the world, from New York to Central and South America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia, and then back to San Francisco, Winona, and New York. Travel to Europe and the Middle East were not unusual trips during her school’s summer recess. The walls of her home were adorned with happy mementos of those travels.
Along with Elayne’s birth family and classroom family, she had loving families in her parishes. From St. Joseph’s Parish in Winona to St. Malachy’s Parish in Tamarac, Elayne was a beloved friend, big sister, surrogate step-Mom or aunt, and wise counsel to many. She found great joy in serving others, whether bringing Holy Communion to the homebound, serving as a lector and Extraordinary Minister at Mass, helping to tidy up her Church home, helping with the accounting for collections, or anything else she could do.
Elayne’s families will join, personally or in spirit, at St. Malachy’s Parish on Monday morning, March 28th, at 11:00, to celebrate her life, and to give thanks for the joy and love Elayne shared.
