Dear Dor,
Shirley emailed me yesterday with the news of your mother's passing. The trauma associated with such a loss is never totally avoidable, no matter how much one expects it or prepares emotionally for it. You have my deepest sympathy of course and please convey the same to Joy. I now welcome you to the ever-growing company of orphans. The sorrow and the pain exists for now but this, too, will pass.

Having twice met your mother, and seeing how happy and contented she was knowing that Dorothy and Joy were always around for her at one time or another,I thought this recent poem written by a 9 year old Canadian Grade 4 female student would capture how she felt about home knowing that her 2 daughters and 2 sons were always there for her. 
The Meaning of Home
Your heart belongs in a place called home
When you are there, you are never alone
It's more than just a place to live
It's a place where families love and give
It's a place where you care, a place where you share
Where you snuggle together in your favourite chair
In a home, happiness is all around you
It's a place where loved ones always surround you
A home is where you feel safe and warm
It's where you find shelter from a storm
Days filled with emotions, with laughter and tears
And even on days when it's all little fears
There are days to be shared and memories made
The love found in a home will never ever fade.

Your mother was a warm, friendly and humorous lady. I enjoyed the time I lived with her and her family in Jamaica as well as visits in Florida. We all have to die but she will surely be missed. May her soul rest in peace.
