There are no words to express the immense hole Eugene left behind in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to have known him in one capacity or another, but we can only try our best to honor his memory.

Eugene and I didn’t really meet until I was 15. We didn’t have many cousins in this new country, and Eugene was the closest one we had. I remember us spending so much time being teenagers together. We would walk from our homes to get Crazy Bread and ice-cream, and we spent many fun afternoons together in the 90s.

He accompanied me on my growth journey while I was learning to live in a new country at the same time. He took me into his life all the same despite my youthful ignorance and the cultural differences from day one.

He was always welcoming and full of love, enough to fill every soul that had come into his life and more.

To his closest families:
Please know that you had done the best you could at the time. Try not to let your mind wanders too much on what you could have done differently.

My heart aches for losing Eugene, but I know it can’t compare to the ones who hold him the dearest. Take comfort that he had lived life to the fullest and that he had won the game of life, not only in the traditional sense, but also through all the relationships he had held. He brought us, including strangers and people who drifted apart because life got in the way, he brought us together even now at this incredibly difficult moment.

For us remaining players:
Live well. Grieve as you need to, but find joy in the small moments, despite life’s challenges.

It is ok to laugh because Eugene loves to laugh and make others laughs because he loves to make people happy.

Don’t stop moving forward. Don’t wait to find joy.
Life can change in an instant.

我相信在場嘅每個人都無辦法接受 Eugene 突然其來嘅死信。
我哋都好慶幸喺唔同嘅情形下認識到 Eugene，但係我哋都冇辦法形容 Eugene 喺我哋心中留下嘅巨大空缺，言語已經無法形容呢種痛楚，我哋只可以盡力去表達。

我直到 15 歲先真正認識 Eugene。我哋喺美國唔係有好多個表親，Eugene 係我哋最親近嘅一個。我記得嗰時成日同佢一齊喺屋企行出去對面Pizza舖食麵包，跟住去隔離雪糕舖食雪糕。雖然嗰時我有好多嘢都唔容易，但係我好記得同佢一齊渡過好開心嘅時光。

係我努力咁適應異國生活嘅成長歷程之中，我一直有佢嘅陪伴。雖然我嗰時年少無知，又有好多嘅文化差異，但係佢都可以一開始就同你不見而故。佢永遠都係好歡迎你嚟到佢嘅天地。佢總喺熱情好客、充滿愛心。

同佢最親密嘅家人，我想同你哋講，你哋已經盡咗你嘅努力，做咗你當時最好嘅選擇。希望你哋唔好用太多時間沉醉於遺憾同猜疑之間, 唔好糾結起「如果當時點樣做就或者可能會改變結果」咁樣嘅念頭。

我對 Eugene 嘅離開好心痛，但係我知道遠遠都不級佢至親至愛身邊嘅人。但係希望你哋知道 Eugene 已經活出最精彩嘅人生。佢係人生嘅贏家，唔只係普遍人認為贏家嘅標準， 更體現係佢同佢每一個接觸過人嘅關係。
 
喺呢個我哋都一齊經歷緊嘅無比艱難嘅時刻，Eugene 依然將我哋 - 包括陌生人，唔係好熟嘅人, 以及嗰D因為各種各樣生活嘅關係而漸行漸遠嘅人 - 重新凝聚係一齊。

In Loving Memory of Eugene, 

This photo was taken in June 2018. To this day, I could still remember when you have taken us on the boat ride along the shore on a nice Sunday afternoon that summer. That was one of the favorite moments during my time in the U.S. and I was truly able to enjoy my vacation and relaxed after the semester of high school. Thank you for always planning events (the Avengers: Infinity War movie, seafood buffet, playing pickle ball, eating dim sum & Chinese food, etc.) out and spending time with me even though you were busy whenever I visited my aunt and uncle (Janet and Keung). 

Moreover, you have always embodied the value of filial piety I constantly looked up to by the way you cared for your mom and dad no matter it was spending time dining with them, taking care of them,  making sure they are safe, and accompanied them to receive medical care especially when my aunt needed surgery this past year. 

You brought joy into this world and I will forever remember that I had a dear cousin who always thought of others and were a true blessing to those around you. I will carry your joy and love family and others forward! Rest in peace 達達表哥. You will be remembered.

Eugene - You are a dear friend and you will forever live in my heart. We have shared so many good times together in high school, especially Senior Year. You were always up for fun, always there when someone needed you, and always made people feel better just by being you. All these years later, it seems you never changed, which is so inspiring. When I think of Uncle Eugene, the first thing that comes to mind is his bright smile. The second would be his cheerful energy and his ability to make people laugh. Visiting his place was always fun and I remember playing with all the foster kittens. He had such a big heart and would take care of the neighborhood cats. 

Maybe it is the younger sibling energy but I would always have some sort of banter with him over silly topics like wanting bingsoo at 10pm at night. Even though it was pretty late, he still drove us to a dessert shop. 

There was never a boring day hanging out with him, eating crabs, pour painting on canvases and eating his homemade avocado ice cream (not very yummy). I am super glad to have met Uncle Eugene and his contagious positive vibes.

Until now, I still cannot accept the fact that you have left us. Although we rarely saw each other, my feelings for you are deeper than words can say. I still remember the first time we met. You had the brightest smile. From that day on, every time we met became an unforgettable memory and I deeply cherished every moment we spent together. You always brought so much joy and happiness to everyone. You were such a kind and warm person who cared deeply for others. Your warmth made everyone feel loved. Dear Eugene,

Thank you for being the joy and sunshine in the lives of everyone who knew you. Thank you for teaching me that it’s not embarrassing to say “I love you” and give tight hugs. Thank you for embodying filial piety and reminding me that I need to treat my parents, elders, and everyone around me better — you had a way of making everyone feel included.

Whenever I picture you, you always have the biggest grin on your face. A lot of people think an 8-tooth smile is perfect, but your 16-tooth grin — top and bottom — was always the one that brought that same smile out in everyone around you.

You lived life fully, without regret or reserve. Your existence inspired me and empowered me to try to do the same. Thank you for always remembering what I liked — buying me Hello Kitty stuff, taking me to watch Cinderella at AMC, never making me feel bad about buying food at the theater or ordering more than water to drink at restaurants, despite my frugal Chinese upbringing. Thank you for proofreading my resume, for worrying about me. Our interactions were few, but every one of them is forever etched in my mind.

I am so grateful to have known you and to have called you 表哥. I will make sure to call 姑媽 and 姑丈 more often and make them feel loved.

Rest in peace, 達達表哥. I’ll carry your grin with me.

How lucky I am for having shared this journey with you in this life; and I am hopeful that we  meet again in the next. Saying goodbye is hard but please let it be temporary until we say hello again.

Going over pictures of the past, thinking about which one to post, there so many, all bringing their memories and emotions. I hear your voice, and feel your presence as if this past week had never happened. We've shared many trips, many experiences and many shots. How fun it had been to be there with you, laughing, smiling, and exploring. Because of you, I am a better man.

There was never a moment with Eugene that wasn't full of joy. He was love, light, and laughter — and I will forever carry the warmth of his spirit with me. He will be so greatly missed.

You loved to eat ! OMG you where so lean and I never knew the secret or where the food went, but you will tell me one day, and I wish we could have shared another meal or bottle of Champaigne together 🥘  I ran out of photo space and could share for days, miss you  bru, Kim misses you, Atlas & Everest will know about your life. You where always looking after Jeff 🥹 i remember this day like it was the weekend and never laughed so much, at the expressions, comments and jokes on this hike, what I would do for one more Joshua tree or Cape Town trip - we will hike again in heaven my man, I promise you that. You didn’t relax much but when you did it was in style 😎 Always up for a trip. Adventures, new experiences, and you only took time off to recharge and do it all over again, that infectious energy could charge the planet, rest well now my friend and thank you 🏃

I had met Eugene years ago when my parents and I regularly traveled from California to visit my brother Hung and Scott.  

There was one night we would never forget.  We arrived late at the airport, expecting Hung to pick us up, but he failed to show up while Scott was out of town.  Unable to reach Hung, we started worrying if something happened to Hung, so I posted on Facebook.  

Eugene saw the post, responded, and came by to take my parents and me to Hung's place.  (Hung had fallen asleep while waiting to pick us up, exhausted from the long work week.)

My parents and I never forgot that night because we were so touched by Eugene’s caring nature.  We had continued to witness his generosity, thoughtfulness and care through the years since then, as well.  

My mom and dad were crushed to hear of his passing for they loved Eugene, appreciating all his wonderful qualities.  From one parent to another, their hearts go out to Eugene’s parents, as my family and I continue to pray for Eugene, his parents, his family and his partner Jeff for this unimaginable loss.  And while we cannot attend the services next week, we will continue to light an incense stick and pray for him and his family from afar.

Eugene – thank you for coming into our lives.  Your love, generosity, and energy will never be forgotten.  

We will find you among the brightest of stars from each night onwards.  

Rest now and know you are forever loved by so many...
