Mel Roth always responded to the moods that moved him. And September 16th would be no different. After almost 80 years on the planet and a happy life that included a speed bump or two, he was on to his next adventure.
Tearful hospice goodbyes and warm memories had been whispered in his ear for days. And when there was nothing left for his loved ones to say, when it was time to go, he was gone. He left no forwarding address but those who loved and admired him know exactly where he is. They include his sons Steven, Marc and Ben, his wife Cathi, grandsons Daniel, Jacob and Eli. His best friend Jerry (a brother from another mother). And a lifetime of friends and acquaintances.
He could, and would happily, beat you at tennis, backgammon and basketball (he played freshman hoops at NYU). He helped build Wexler, McCarron & Roth into Florida’s best and most creative advertising agency. He had a brilliant marketing mind. He was the leader of the band and the people who worked with him loved and respected him.
He couldn’t get enough of his Dolphins, Yankees and Heat. He wasn’t quite Chef Melvin but he crafted magnificent Bloody Marys and Caesar salads. He never met a casino he didn’t like. His favorite place on earth was Positano, Italy.
Melvin Howard Roth, son of Fay and Al, was a bit of a rogue who lived life pretty much on his own terms. No shackles for Mel. And, certainly, no urns. His ashes will be given to the four winds. They will happily take him wherever he chooses to go.
Melvin has left the building. And the building will never be quite the same.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Melvin's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
