Micilene Joyce Yapp, endearingly called Mama Yapp by all that knew her, was born in Warsop, Trelawny, Jamaica to Adora Williams and Alexander Hyman. As a young woman, she moved to Anchovy, Saint James to learn the art of sewing. While living in Anchovy, she met her husband, Johnson Yapp. After they married, they had 10 beautiful children, Agnes (Faye), Ralph, Olive, Marjorie, Astley, Yevon, Barrington, Vilma, Herbert, and Meryl (Donna).
She was an exceptional homemaker and talented seamstress. She was also an enthusiastic member of the Mount Carey Baptist Church and one of the founding members of the burial scheme society. She was also a member of the church choir.
Mama Yapp and her husband worked various jobs to send their children to the best schools in Jamaica so they could be provided with the best education. They valued hard work and instilled that into their children.
After her husband passed away in 1977, she was left alone to care for the remaining young children. After Olive and Yevon moved to Florida, she reared her grandchildren, Denise and Orlene, until they were sponsored to come to the States. Years later, she immigrated to the United States in 1985 to join her daughters and granddaughters in South Florida.
While living in Florida, she continued to care for her family by taking care of her granddaughter, Danielle. She was very active in various churches in the South Florida area. She sang in the choir, helped with the church garage sales, and watched the children during choir practice.
Her favorite pastime was doing word search puzzles, crochet, fine embroidery, and sewing. On the weekends, she spent time with her daughter and granddaughter shopping at the local malls. She enjoyed traveling with her family and writing handwritten letters to her friends and family in Jamaica and abroad.
She is survived by her 8 children and their partners, Agnes Miller, Olive Law, Marjorie Hoffman, Yevon Yapp, Vilma Yapp, Herbert Yapp, Meryl McGhee, and Eric Yapp, her grandchildren Denise Myrie, Orlene Naggie, Marcia Yapp, Danielle Gaulden, Junior Yapp, Sashoy Yapp, Michael Hanna, Laila Pirnazar, Zhila Pirnazar, and 6 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnson Yapp, and 3 sons, Barrington Yapp, Astley Yapp, and Ralph Yapp.
May your soul rest in eternal peace, our dear Mama Yapp - You will be greatly missed.
