Danny (Dan) Holcomb was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 25, 2024, at age 90.
Dan was born on June 25, 1934, in Columbia, MO. He graduated from Topeka HS and Washburn University in Topeka, KS with a BS in PE. He obtained his graduate degree from Florida State in 1962. In 1965, Dan was hired by the University of South Florida to become its first NCAA men's soccer coach. He coached USF’s first athletic event. By the time his USF days ended in 1986, Dan had taken his team to seven NCAA tournaments and won eight Sun Belt Conference championships. While his overall record of 216-87-22 is impressive, his post-season mark of 24-7-4 is close to outstanding. While head coach of the men's soccer team, Dan did not have a losing season during his 22 years. He also coached the men’s tennis team in 1978. After retiring from coaching in 1986, Dan continued working at USF as Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for over 16 years. In 2010, Dan was inducted into the USF Athletics Hall of Fame.
In the summer, Dan could be found at his beloved camp Indian Acres, in Fryeburg, ME. He taught tennis for most years from 1957 to 2019. He was known as “Dan Tampa Tennis” at his home away from home, his “Summer Place”.
You might imagine transitioning from the soccer field with college-age men to home as the father of three girls could be a challenge based on the team’s travel schedule, success in games or practice, or even the weather. Still, Dan was a fun and energetic father, always supportive of his three girls who he jokingly said: “could do no wrong”.
Dan was a former member of Lake Carroll Baptist Church and an active member at Lake Magdalene Church. He was a man of prayer and a living example of Christ’s love.
After retirement, Dan coached youth soccer and taught tennis in Tampa. He also competed in senior tennis tournaments. Dan and his wife enjoyed traveling. He developed colorful gardens at home and went fly fishing.
Dan is united with His Savior in Heaven and reunited with those before him, including his father, Floyd Holcomb, mother, Marjorie Holcomb, and grandson Andrew Burnham. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 32 years, Joyce; daughters Melinda Burnham (Wesley), Dr. Leigh Holcomb, and Kristin Johnson (Scott) and his former wife Shirley Holcomb; grandchildren Alyssa Floyd (Landon), Bryce Burnham, Rheanna Atherton, Sarah Gonzales (Gil), Julia Johnson, Hannah Johnson; great-granddaughter Vivian Floyd; 4 stepchildren, 8 step-grandchildren and 2 step-great grandsons.
A Visitation will be held at Lake Magdalene Church from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Friday, August 30, 2024. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 10:30 AM at Lake Magdalene Church, 2902 W. Fletcher Ave, Tampa, FL 33618.
