On January 10, 2024, Dencyl “Denny” Cartwright of Tampa, Florida, a born again believer, transitioned to his Heavenly home with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Phylicia Cartwright (sisters Elizabeth and Renee), sons Neil Cartwright (wife Melinda and grandson Liam), Robby Cartwright-deceased (children Aspen, Sadie and Sadie’s mother Tracy Spitler) and Larry Cartwright and wife Shannon (children Alexandria, Lauren, and Luke); daughter Amanda Densford (husband Barry) who lives in Memphis, Tennessee, and daughter Ashley Cartwright (children Madison, Kylin, Journee, and Elizabeth) who lives in Myrtle, Mississippi.
Denny was born to Myrtis and Hosea Cartwright on April 28, 1953, in Nassau Bahamas, and was the eldest of 11 children Charles, Maude, Rosemary, Ruth, Andrew, Andy, David, Leroy (deceased), Wendall (deceased), and Jane.
Denny graduated from The College of the Bahamas and pursued a career in radio and television repair. He traveled abroad to work in that field and after becoming an American citizen began working with Diebold Banking Systems and then later with ADT/Tyco, until leaving that field. In 2020, Denny began working for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department as a Crossing Guard at Ben Hill Middle School and Claywell Elementary School, until December 22, 2023 when he suffered a massive heart attack. After multiple attempts at life saving measures he lost a hard fought battle with Phylicia remaining daily by his side. This school year Denny worked exclusively at Claywell and received several Certificates of commendations from Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister for his outstanding work and outreach to the community. Denny’s passion for the safety and wellbeing of the children and parents that crossed his post was a major source of joy for him. He “fist-bumped”, complimented, and encouraged many children who would have otherwise started their day without that special boost to their self-esteem. He always had a smile on his face and reflected the joy of the Lord in his heart.
Denny became an American citizen in his late 20’s and was very proud of his American citizenship. He was also a Patriot to his core.
Denny was adored by Jane Boatright (Phylicia’s mother) and Larry Warmack (Phylicia’s uncle).
A Celebration of Life will take place at Blount & Curry Funeral Home Carrollwood located at 3207 West Bearss Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33618. Denny loved flowers and they are welcomed at the Celebration.
