Donald Thomas Heyden passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at the age of 79. While he was a proud New Yorker, an Army veteran who served in Vietnam, a graduate of Fordham University and a dedicated professional with a nearly 30-year career at Citibank, his true legacy was never what he did for a living—it was who he loved.
For his family, Don was the ultimate anchor. He shared 53 beautiful years of marriage with his wife, Mary, building a life grounded entirely in love and partnership. For his daughters, Jennifer (Curt) Harman and Susan (Craig) Berkowitz, he was an unwavering rock and, simply put, their hero. Don was their world, their greatest advocate, and their absolute safest place. He possessed a rare, comforting gift for being incredibly easy to talk to, combined with a sharp sense of humor and an immense, protective nature. He was a pillar of strength for everyone who knew him. Don always made sure his family knew how much he loved them.
Don’s absolute favorite chapter began nearly 18 years ago when he became a grandfather. He poured boundless affection into Mary (almost 18), Connor (15), and Timothy "Timmy" (14), who quickly became the center of his world. He didn't just watch them grow; he immersed himself in their lives—making up songs, exploring alongside them, and fiercely supporting whatever sparked their imaginations. He made a profound effort to see the world through their eyes, and his steadfast presence is deeply woven into who they are today.
His immense heart also extended outward through his quiet generosity, whether donating to community causes or anonymously funding classrooms for disadvantaged students simply because he wanted to make a difference.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Evelyn Heyden, and his younger sister, Jo Ellen Heyden, Don leaves behind a family fundamentally shaped by his kindness. He will be deeply missed, but his humor, his steady presence, and his devoted love will remain the anchor for everyone who meant the world to him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to a charity of your choice should you choose to.
