Donald Hunt, age 75, of Plant City, Florida passed away on June 3, 2019.

Don was born in Rowland, North Carolina on October 14, 1943. He served his country well as a Vietnam veteran in the United States Air Force and then after 32 years of service retired from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. One of Don’s fondest pastimes is best characterized by his many years volunteering with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse where he served in several leadership positions including President. In addition, he was a founding member of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Enforcement Team. It was during these times when he combined his passions for horseback riding, the love of the great outdoors and making new friends wherever he went.

Don is survived by his three children Darren Hunt, Darryl Hunt and Debbie Hanneken, and his 8 grandchildren. We celebrate his wonderful life and faith in Jesus Christ now that he is home with the Lord.

A visiting memorial service will be held Sunday, June 9, 2019, from 2-4PM at the Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 3207 West Bearss Ave., Tampa, FL 33618.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Don’s honor at:

I first met Don hunt when I started competing in the Mounted Police competition Olympics and games. Don welcomed us with open arms and did everything he could to make our County feel engaged and welcomed. I ended up getting to know Don quite well spend a lot of time with him during the event and can say that it was definitely a friendship that will be missed

I remember at HCSO we would have to run 1.5 miles in a specified amount of time to pass. One year I was really training hard for it and made my mind up, I was going to beat everyone. I was maybe 22 years old at the time. Well I didn’t account for Don being in the race. All I know is he passed me up and beat me pretty bad and then jumped straight on the treadmill. He was a good man and athlete. RIP brother

My dad was 1 of 1 and once you were around him for any length of time, you couldn’t help but agree. He always had a smile for you wether he new you or not. He didn’t come from much but what he left behind was worth more than money could ever buy. Simple, one of the best ways I remember him to be in all aspects of his life. The joke was that he still had the first wooden nickel he had ever earned. I’ve heard countless times since the day my dad left for his eternal life of how much he will be missed and I too feel the same, but my dad ALWAYS felt BLESSED for the friendships he was given and he will miss all of us too! He is no longer suffering, and he is not alone he always made friends anywhere he went. Heaven will be no different, I promise you that. Please remember my dad in your own special way, he would want that, as your place in his life was 1 of 1 just like he was!
So until we meet again Dad-E-O go rest high on that mountain, we got it from here and thank you for all your love and encouragement through the years. I won’t let you down!
Love your son,
Crash

I fondly remember we running our first marathon together from the old Schlitz Brewery. We both finished in just over 3 hours. That was the first of many runs we had together. I treasure those runs.

I will always cherish my time riding his beloved horse Mandy. We were lucky enough to board her at our home for awhile. Mr. Hunt was very active in the community bringing his team to Sadie Park, in Brandon, to educate the children on safety and very generous with his time. He was a close friend, considered family, and will be missed. What a legacy he leaves for us. Rest high with the rest of the clan that has left us too soon. Elfie and Sharon are celebrating your presence.
