Fred was born December 19, 1936, in Jakarta, Indonesia, to Georg and Emma Friedrichs. He and his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1948. They were members of Lutheran Church of the Messiah in Decatur, Georgia.
He graduated Murphy High School in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1955, and Newberry College, Newberry, South Carolina, in 1959. After teaching in Atlanta Schools, he received a master’s degree and Post Graduate work in Post-Secondary Education from the University of Georgia. He spent the rest of his career as an Administrator at Athens Area Vocational Technical Institute, now Athens Technical College. Following retirement, he and Ann moved to Arden, North Carolina, living in the Lutheridge residential community.
Fred was involved in many church, community, and scouting activities. He thrived as a volunteer beginning in Athens, continuing well into retirement years in Arden. He devoted many years with BSA Troop 22 in Athens, including serving as Eagle Scout Advancement Chair for the Cherokee District. Following retirement, he was connected to Troop 8 in the Asheville area, serving as Institutional Representative, Troop Committee, and advising Eagle Scout candidates. At Lutheridge, many of his landscaping projects are still visible in that community. In Athens, he was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, and later a member of the Lutheran Church of the Nativity in Arden.
He is survived by his sister Ursula Wells (Wayne), of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, his son the Rev. Eric Friedrichs (Tara), of Tampa, Florida, his daughter Kelly Friedrichs Valldeperas (Dan), of Cumming, Georgia, his grandchildren Emily Friedrichs, Jordan Friedrichs (fiancé Mackenzie Dickson), Alexis Valldeperas, and extended family Ulrich Stahl and Sibylle Stahl of Lower Saxony, Germany.
Fred was predeceased by his wife, Ann in May of 2018.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Lutheran Church of the Nativity, 2425 Hendersonville Road Arden, North Carolina, The Rev. Richard Graf presiding.
The family is grateful for the extensive and compassionate care provided by Trinity View, Arden, NC, Moffitt Cancer Center, and The Legacy Assisted Living both of Tampa.
