Gerald (Jerry) Hewitt Ohmstede of Tampa, Florida passed away at his home on October 13, 2021 at the age of 90. Graveside services will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Tampa Florida Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 10 a.m. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. at Hyde Park United Methodist Church in Tampa, Florida.
Jerry was born on March 25, 1931 in Tampa, Florida. He was happily married to Betty Lou Ohmstede for 67 years. She was the love of his life. In his early years he was actively involved in the life of his sons as a baseball coach and scout volunteer, and encouraged his daughter in all of her endeavors. Jerry was a member of Hyde Park United Methodist Church and attended a small group bible study on Wednesdays with a group of men he cherished. He worked for over 30 years for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier, supervisor and Postmaster, from which he retired at the age of 55. He loved traveling with Betty in his retirement years, usually on cruises to places like Canada, Alaska or the Caribbean. Later in life he especially enjoyed sitting in the front yard watching the neighborhood children play, talking to all the neighbors who passed by and talking every day to his friend and letter carrier Bill.
The family is thankful for the many memories the neighbors have expressed of Jerry over the past few days. We are also extremely thankful for the love and support, many meals and helping hands that have been extended to my parents over the past few years.
Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty, and was heartbroken after she went on to heaven in July; and by his parents, John Louis Ohmstede and Marguerite Ivy Hewitt (Tillman). Jerry is survived by his two sons, Greg (Carol) Ohmstede of Emerald Isle, North Carolina, Gary (Robin) Ohmstede of Birmingham, Alabama; one daughter, Mariane Ohmstede of Tampa, Florida; two grandchildren, Drew (Sumner) Ohmstede of Birmingham, Alabama, and Lauren (Brad) Hobbs of San Antonio, Texas; three great grandchildren, Kinley, Adalyn (Ady) and William (Keller) Hobbs, and by his two brothers, Thomas (Alice) Ohmstede of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Francis (Grace) Ohmstede of Tennessee, and his sister Linda Elmore of Newberry, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hyde Park United Methodist Church, 500 West Platt Street, 33606.
