Gertis M Carty, affectionately known as "BG", was born on June 13, 1932, to the late John Fambro and Marie Ellis in Fort Valley, GA. At the age of 94, BG passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026, with her loving son, Joseph, by her side. BG went to school in Fort Valley and later graduated with an associate degree from Voorhees University. BG made her way up to New York to look for work. Most of BG's working years were at New York City Health and Hospital, where she worked for nearly 30 years. BG's last position was Human Resources Manager. While enjoying NYC, BG made friends with singer, Dinah Washington.
At the age of 19, BG met Joseph Hunt Sr, they fell in love and got married. They lived in Brooklyn and then had their first son, Carlton Jerome Hunt at Kings County Hospital in 1952. They needed more room, so they moved to Harlem, where they had their second son, Joseph Hunt Jr, at the Harlem Hospital in 1954. They divorced five years later, and BG and the boys moved to The Bronx at St Mary's projects.
BG was active in St Martin's church in Harlem. BG attended services on Sunday, while the boys went to Sunday School. Later joined BG in church services when they were older. BG loved to stay active, in the Summer, she would often take 7 young boys to Coney Island beach via the subways with no other adults. At St Mary's, BG would sit on the Tenant's Patrol to help keep the project safe. BG loved Bowling, she would bowl in a league sometimes 2 or 3 nights a week. BG also participated in Bowling tournaments, once in a Pro-Am. BG won awards and trophies with her love for bowling.
Here's the big one, BG was a die-hard METS fan. BG tried to watch every game that was on TV. BG and her friend Mary would take a long subway ride to go to the game. They would stay there rain or shine. They would be the last ones leaving the ballpark. BG knew all players and up until her last days, BG would ask if the Mets won today!
BG loved her music especially the Spinners, the O Jays, the Temptations, Pattie Labelle, Nat King Cole and many others. BG with her friend Mary would go to the Spinners/O Jays concerts and brag about how close their seats were that the singers would sweat on them. As soon as BG hears some oldies R&B, she would start dancing. BG loved travelling and vacationing. She has been to Europe, Central America and the Caribbean. BG and her niece Ruth would travel together. One special trip was to take an Alaskan cruise. BG also loved to go to the Comedy Clubs and meet the comedians afterwards.
BG was always smiling, had a great laugh and always made people feel comfortable. BG especially loved her grandkids and great grandkids. She was always there for them, supported them when they needed it, guided them as they grew up.
