

UITERWYK, Hendrik (Henk), 74, of Tampa, FL, died Thursday, December 10, 2020, with his family at his side. Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, the son of the late Jan and Maria Uiterwyk, Henk grew up on Davis Island, attending Plant High School, where he was a champion swimmer. After college and law school in New Orleans at Tulane University (B.A., 1968; J.D., 1970), he returned to Tampa to work in the family shipping business with his father and brothers before practicing law.
A respected trial lawyer, he successfully tried over a hundred jury trials during his nearly forty year career. He while training and mentoring many young attorneys as a founding partner of Abrahamson & Uiterwyk, P.A. He took and won cases others could not settle. For the past fifteen years, he championed lawsuits on behalf of victims of the tobacco industry. In 2017, he received the Jon E. Krupnick Award from the Florida Justice Association, awarded each year to a trial lawyer whose efforts on behalf of a client reflect relentless commitment, perservance, and fortitude to seek justice and achieve success through all obstacles and roadblocks encountered—a fitting tribute for how he served all of his clients.
He worked hard, lived fully, and loved his family deeply. Surviving are his wife, whom he adored and was dedicated to for the last thirty-three years, Vicki S. Uiterwyk of Tampa, FL; four sons and daughters-in-law: Dr. Sean H. Uiterwyk (Lisa) of Lyme, NH, Dustin Graham (Carolina) of New York, NY, Patrick T. Uiterwyk (Kristin) of Hingham, MA, and John-Neil Uiterwyk (Megan) of Melbourne, Australia; ten grandchildren: Reilly Uiterwyk, Claire Uiterwyk, Dylan Graham, Olivia Graham, Ian Uiterwyk, Willow Uiterwyk, Benjamin Uiterwyk, Leo Uiterwyk, Wyatt Uiterwyk, and Emmett Uiterwyk; two brothers: Robert H. Uiterwyk of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Jan D. Uiterwyk of Brooksville, Florida; as well as many friends, colleauges, cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families.
He was a member of the Florida Justice Association, Tampa Bay Trial Lawyers Association, Maritime Law Association of the United States, and the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute. He was also a member of the University Club of Tampa, Merrymaker’s Club, Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club, Wildcat Cliffs Country Club, and Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla.
A private graveside service for family members will be held on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park. A memorial service (and an “unnn-believable” party) will be arranged for a future date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Tampa General Hospital Foundation.
