Born on September 1, 1936, at Trelles Clinic in Ybor City, Hilda was the beloved daughter of the late Harry Lee and Hilda Elena McIntosh. She was a proud lifelong resident of Tampa, Florida, where she built a life centered on faith, family, and enduring friendships. She was also a long time member at Fellowship Baptist Church where she was well loved by her church community.
Hilda married William Charles Hancock on January 14, 1955. Early in their marriage, Charles was diagnosed with polio, and together they faced the challenges that followed with determination and commitment. As Charles pursued a degree in accounting at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Hilda was by his side every step of the way, often pushing his wheelchair from class to class so he could complete his education. Their dedication to one another became well known throughout the university community. In recognition of her unwavering support and commitment, the University of South Florida honored Hilda with an honorary degree. Their partnership was a lasting example of love, perseverance, and devotion to one another and their family.
Family was at the center of Hilda’s life. She loved spending time with those she loved most, whether it was traveling with Charles and their children through the Blue Ridge Mountains or making memories at their lake house on Lake Hatchineha, Florida. Large family gatherings became cherished traditions. Holidays were especially important to Hilda, and she took great joy in bringing everyone together around the table.
To her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, she was simply “Pia.” One of her greatest blessings was seeing five generations of her family together. She also treasured her many lifelong friendships and was well known for spending hours on the telephone catching up with friends and sharing stories.
Hilda was preceded in death by her devoted husband, William Charles Hancock; her brother, Harry Lee McIntosh Jr.; and her cherished granddaughter, Stacie Leigh Solis.
She is lovingly survived by her three children: Elaine Broker (David), Bill Hancock (Elaine Etheridge), and Catherine Hancock (Tim Stewart). Four grandchildren: Sheridan Blair, Amber Hancock, Brendan Johnson (Nicole Smith), and Breanne Johnson. Six great-grandchildren: Austin Blair (Rebecca), Adam and Samuel Solis, Joseph, Jaiden, and Jett Johnson, along with three great-great-grandchildren: Roan, Knox, and Cade Blair. She is also lovingly remembered by many other extended family members.
