April 30, 1934 – October 7, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Irene Campbell McKinney, 92, of Tampa, Florida. Irene passed away at home, surrounded by her 4 children, on October 7, 2026.
Born in Tampa, Florida, Irene entered a family story that was, at times, uncertain and complicated. Amid life’s uncertainties, she was deeply cherished by her mom, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, who doted on her as the first grandchild of her immediate family. Their love gave her a lasting sense of belonging and helped shape the warmth and strength she carried throughout her life.
Fresh out of high school at Hillsborough High, she began her first job at the Chamber of Commerce. It was a perfect fit for her curious spirit and easy way with people: she met fascinating personalities, appeared in the local paper multiple times, and loved the feeling of being connected to the life and pulse of her community. She was never afraid of hard work and held multiple positions throughout her lifetime. During the last 30 years of her life, she worked as a devoted nanny, nurturing young hearts and minds, helping lay strong foundations, and leaving a lasting imprint on the families she cared for.
Irene also carried with her a determination to break old family patterns and give her own children the opportunities she had sometimes been denied. Whether it was something as simple as wanting to learn an instrument or something much bigger, she believed in finding a way. She was determined that her children would never be limited by the circumstances that had once limited her.
She also regretted not having had the opportunity to attend college, but after her divorce, as a single mother, she changed that story for herself. She returned to school, earned her associate degree, and did so with straight A’s. In so many ways, she refused to let the limitations of her past become the limitations of her future. She turned what she had wished for into what she was determined to make possible.
Irene had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and found pure joy in learning. Her immense creativity shone through her written words, poetry, and arts and crafts, while her adventurous spirit drew her to reality shows about human survival. Above all, she loved taking her grandchildren on epic road-trip adventures, traveling as far as the Grand Canyon to create unforgettable memories.
She lived life on her own terms, with strength, dignity, and independence. She took great pride in remaining physically strong and self-reliant, always determined to care for herself and never be a burden to those she loved.
She is survived by her children, Francis Lewis McKinney, III (Fariba), Susan Allison Halpin (the late Kevin), Judith McKinney Aubé, and Dinah Kendall Bishop (Adrian); her niece, Emma Vaccaro (Skip); her nephew, Michael Campbell; her grandniece, Erin Rojas (David), her grandchildren, Hannah, Sean, Taylor, Aidan, Liam; her great-grandniece, Violet; and extended family members and friends who held a special place in her heart.
A private celebration of Irene’s life will be held in the near future. Family and friends are invited to share memories, photos, and messages of condolence on this memorial page.
“May God grant her a final home more excellent than her earthly one.”
