Joan L. Durkin was called home in the early morning hours of March 16 at the age of 90. She passed peacefully from complications of Parkinson's Disease. She was born January 10, 1926, one of three children of Frank and Frances. She attended the University of Illinois and was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. After completing a course at the John Powers Modeling School in New York, she was hired as a professional model by Marshall Field & Co in Chicago. On September 24, 1949, she married Patrick Durkin and together they happily raised a family of four. She and her husband moved to Tampa in 1984 where she became active in the Carrollwood Newcomers and The Grads. Joan loved fashion, tennis, dancing, music and a day at the beach. Most of all she loved her family which was the center of her life. Spending time with her adult children or pouring over pictures of their families always provided Joan the most happiness. She was a member of St. Lawrence Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister for several years. The Durkin family is grateful for the kindness and dedicated circle of care Joan received at Arden Court during the past six months. She is survived by Patrick, her devoted husband of 66 years and children: Richard of Milwaukee, WI, Diane Lampe of Kent, WA, Susan Freking of Cincinnati, OH and Mary Ann Coenen of Orlando, FL as well as 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 11:30 am Monday, March 21, 2016. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will be in Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville, IL.
