HUGHES, Johnny Paul (Paul), resident of Tampa, Florida; formerly of Hartford, Alabama, passed away on December 22, 2018 at the age of 61 years. He was born on June 23, 1957 in Hartford, the son of Leonard Hughes and Sarah Sellers.
Paul was a graduate of Geneva High School in 1974 where he graduated as valedictorian at the age of 16 years old. After high school, Paul was a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College in 1977 where he was awarded the Tinsley Randolph Harrison Scholarship, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated summa cum laude and first in his class. Paul obtained his medical degree in 1981 from the University of Alabama School of Medicine at the University of Alabama in Birmingham where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and graduated cum laude and in the top 5% of his class. Paul performed his post-graduate residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia from July 1981 to June 1985. Paul spent the majority of his career serving as the Chief Pathologist and Medical Director of the Clinical Laboratory at Seven Rivers Community Hospital in Crystal River, Florida till his retirement in 1994.
Paul was a sports enthusiast and loved to watch hockey, baseball, and football. He was an accomplished musician and loved to reminisce about his times playing in a band with his friends in Alabama. In addition, he was a golfer and an avid trivia enthusiast. His family affectionately called him “The Fact Checker.” Paul is remembered for being one of the kindest hearted individuals most people had ever met. His quick wit, charm and giving spirit endeared him to those that were closest to him. He had a generous spirit that never wanted recognition for those that he had helped. His greatest joy was spending time with is family, especially his beautiful granddaughters who he doted on.
Paul dated his wife Sarah Hughes for 15 years prior to their marriage in October 2012. Paul is missed by his wife Sarah Hughes of Tampa; father, Leonard Hughes of Geneva; daughters Kimberly (David) Hunter and Rebecca Weeks; granddaughters Sarah Hunter and Anastasia Weeks, and his faithful canine companion Dynamite.
The family will receive visitors Saturday December 29th from 4pm-5pm at Bottom Garden Chapel Funeral at 12118 AL-52, Hartford, AL 36344. Services will be held at 10am on December 30th at Hartford City Cemetery at 285 Rose Ave, Hartford, AL 36344.
