CW3 Joseph Peter Sullivan (US ARMY Retired) age 78, of Tampa, Florida passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2018.
Joseph was born September 8, 1939 in Boston, Massachusetts the son of Joseph and Mary Anne (née Stoeks) Sullivan.
Joe joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17, retiring after 21 years of service in 1977. While in the service he earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska, and Master’s Degrees from the University of Northern Colorado and Central Michigan University. He served in Korea and completed two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. During his years of service he received many awards including a Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal. Joe later had a successful career in the commercial insurance industry in New York City. He volunteered for many charitable organizations throughout his life including Rotary Club of New York, the USO, the Boy Scouts, and the Salvation Army of Greater New York. He had a love of photography and collecting antique cameras, as well as military memorabilia. Joe married Rachael Huhtanen in 1974. They enjoyed traveling together with good friends to many interesting locations.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Rachael Sullivan; sons, Philip (Kate) Sullivan and Fred (Melissa) Sullivan; daughters, Sandra (Eric) Jungck and Susan (Mike) Bush; sisters, Cathy Buersch and Mary Rhilinger; grandchildren, Liana (Ray) Willis, Claire Sullivan, Emma Bush (Jeremy Heyer), Matthew Sullivan, Hanna Jungck, Joseph Sullivan, Allysa Bush, Sarah Sullivan, John Sullivan, Tom Sullivan and Caroline Jungck; and great-grandson, Kai Atlas Heyer.
A visitation for Joseph will be held Saturday, June 30, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Blount & Curry, Terrace Oaks Funeral Home and Crematory, 12690 N 56th St, Temple Terrace, FL 33617, followed by a funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment with Full Military Honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
