Liz was born in Columbia, Missouri, to George and Anne King on April 7, 1958. She attended K-12 in Missouri and graduated from Hickman High School in Columbia. Liz attended college in both Missouri and Iowa and ultimately earned her BA from Eckerd College in Florida. She worked as a technologist, rising from programmer to director for GTE Data Services which later became Verizon Data Services, for about 25 years, retiring in 2009. She married Jeff Vecera while living in Iowa and gave birth to their daughter Morgan. They relocated permanently to Florida in 1983. She was involved in PEO, which raises money for women to attend college. Liz was a volunteer with Samaritan's Purse.
Liz loved nature and the outdoors. She visited several National Parks throughout the US. She loved stargazing and studying the heavens above, and kept up on all of the upcoming rocket launches. She also loved the water and especially the Florida beaches and the Gulf of Mexico. She was an avid beachcomber, practicing her love for shelling. She also loved fishing, and went often with her Dad and brothers. Not satisfied with staying on the surface of the Gulf, she took up scuba diving so she could see what was going on below by getting closer to the reefs. Liz and a friend were keeping an active list of lighthouses and were checking them off with visits.
Liz was a very talented photographer. She utilized her artistic photography skills to capture all the things she loved, including people, family, and amazing nature and landscape vistas.
She enjoyed many other hobbies such as sewing, painting, baking, and arts and crafts, as well. She loved 70s music and traveled to at least 20 Eagles concerts. She loved traveling with her grandchildren, and she was always helping and caring for others in need.
Liz is preceded in death by her adoring father, George Neal King, her maternal grandparents Edward and Maedell Sutton, and paternal grandparents, George and Louise King, and uncle Ed and aunt Kris Sutton.
Liz is survived by her mother Anne Sutton King, Jeff Vecera, daughter Morgan Vecera, her adopted son Everett Vecera, and her loving granddaughter Ella Vecera, as well as her brothers George (Nancy), David (Lori), and John (Jennifer) King, cousins Elizabeth Crosswhite and Eaddy Sutton, several nieces and nephews, and many other “like a sister to me” loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM ET on Friday, August 2, 2024 at Lake Magdalene Methodist Church on Fletcher Avenue in Tampa, with Pastor Ricc Conner officiating. A greeting and luncheon will immediately follow, also at Lake Magdalene Methodist Church.
There will not be a visitation or public burial.
