She was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, one of four children born to the late Bill Turner and Mary Florence Turner (Viger). She met and later married the love of her life, Raymond Provencal while working at a diner near the Greenwood, Nova Scotia AFB where Air Force personnel would frequent. The two had celebrated 49 years of marriage before Raymond passed in 2008.
Joan worked at the local U-Save supermarket as a meat wrapper for many years and later retired as their Dairy Department Manager. She was good-natured. She was generous, the life of the party, spunky and sassy. Joan enjoyed baking gifts for others to enjoy (mostly for her family, her grandchildren’s sport teams, her doctor’s and her neighbors) especially her famous butterscotch drop cookies. One of her favorite things to do was to watch her granddaughter play softball. The umpires at the games got to know her well, since she was very vocal in letting them know when they called a ball a strike. She was “Nana” to the girls on the team as well as all of the grandchildren’s friends and teammates over the years. Everyone loved Nana!
Joan is preceded in death by her beloved husband Raymond and her youngest sister Patsy Kernick of Kingston, Ontario Canada. She is survived by son, Tony Provencal, of Tampa, daughter, Patty Shemansky (Robert) of Lakeland, three grandchildren; Jonathan Shemansky of Mulberry, Kelly Shemansky of Orlando, Hannah Shemansky of Lakeland, two sisters; Trudy McMahon (Ed) of Burlington, Ontario, Norma Platt (Tim) of Scarborough, Ontario, and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews who all reside in Canada.
