Nabbefeld, Matthew Joseph, 47, passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Moffitt Hospital in Tampa. Matt was born on May 31, 1970 in Lansing, MI and resided in DeWitt, MI until January 1984 when he moved with his mother and brother to Largo, FL. Matt attended Largo Middle School and graduated from Pinellas Park High School. After graduation, Matt enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve and was deployed to service in Operation Desert Storm where he served with the military police. He was so proud to be an American and to serve his country.
Matt loved football, actually Matt loved the Michigan Wolverines...period. He also loved animals and his two dogs, Maya and Shiloh, will grieve right along with the family.
Matt is survived by his mother, Janet Fox Smith, step-father, John (Buddy) Folberth, his wife, April, who was also the love of his life, his best friend and his "angel", daughter, Breanna Lettau, son, Sgt. Anthony Mazzie, brother who shared that special bond, Mark, father, Richard of Lake, MI, in-laws, Bill and Sherry Stockman and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A special thanks to Aunt Julie "Gee" and Uncle Tom, of Portland, MI, for not only being Matt's relative but for also being his friend. You were a very important part of his life. Matt loved his family, he loved being a husband and a father.
A special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Moffitt Hospital for the excellent care and compassion shown to Matt. It's not too often that you find doctors and nursing sharing the tears and prayers with patients and families.
And now to Matt's friends...You are all amazing! Some of you go all the way back to high school and have given him the support he needed to fight this horrible disease. To his "brothers" at Verizon/Frontier, your love and support was felt so deep it was breathtaking. To Jason- thank you for taking the early shift, we slept better knowing you were keeping watch. To Matt Williams, Mike Brooke and Kurt...just thank you.
Matt was our warrior. He fought this disease with everything he had and took everything they threw at him with determination to win. For some unknown reason, it just wasn't enough. Matt was that special person, beautiful inside and out, and you just wanted to be around him. His quick wit and sense of humor kept everyone on their toes. For as hard as Matt fought, he deserved a different outcome. His passing has left a hole in our hearts that will never be filled but he is now pain free. We will always miss you and love you.
He will always be our "HERO"!
