Oswald ‘Ham’ Caines, age 61, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2017 at Tampa General Hospital. He was born on February 26, 1956 in Dieppe Bay, St. Kitts, to Gladys (Caines) Thomas and Edmund Prince. From a young age, Ham had a passion for music and could not wait to get to the band house to practice with Olughbayo, his first band. He sang Co-Lead on Ellie Matt’s 'Viva St. Kitts' and also played lead and rhythm Guitar on the iconic track. He played and toured briefly with Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass. While on tour with Meditations he fell in love with Tampa and decided to make it his home. After years of performing in many different bands, Democracy was born. Democracy has been sending their musical vibes out to the people for over 20 years! As a result of Ham’s commitment, Democracy is now one of the best and most sought after bands in the Tampa, St. Petersburg, Bradenton, Sarasota and Venice area. He is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Roberta-Lynn; Children: Damie (Shantel), Norma-Jean (Colin), Sherry (Raymond), Clarence (Danielle) Makeeda, Richard ‘RJ’ James, Taylor, and Joshua; Six grandchildren: Elijah, Kaleb, Jahayra, Clarence, Ky-mani, and Mia; Mother; Gladys; Mother-In-Law; Bonnie; Siblings: Barbara, Lucienne, Sonia, Bernard, Calvin, Hughley, Dorothy, Gerald, Caroline, Gabrielle, Stephanie, and Cherish; Niece: Nicola, many cousins, and thousands of adoring fans. Family, friends, and others whose lives Ham touched are invited to the Blount & Curry Funeral Home at, 3207 West Bearss Ave, Tampa, FL 33618, from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, to grieve, reminisce, support each other and, of course, jam to some music.
