Patrick Joseph Cotter

Born in Manhattan, New York, Patrick lived a life marked by dedication, deep family devotion, and a proud heritage. A proud New Yorker through and through, Patrick carried his roots with him wherever he went. He loved reminiscing and sharing stories from his childhood, warmly recalling what it was like growing up alongside his family and lifelong friends in Queens. Those foundational years shaped who he was, and he always held a special place in his heart for the neighborhood memories, laughter, and unbreakable bonds built during those early years.

He dedicated his life in service to others as a devoted firefighter, proudly serving 28 years with the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue department and embodying courage, selflessness, and camaraderie throughout his career. Equally deeply rooted was his pride in his Irish heritage—he looked forward to St. Patrick’s Day each year, embraced all Irish traditions, and held a special place in his heart for his trips to Ireland. He also eagerly looked forward to football season, especially cheering on the Fighting Irish and following his nieces' and nephews' alma maters' teams.

Above all, Patrick was exceptionally kind, always willing to help while expecting nothing in return. His greatest joy was his family, and he served as their constant champion and biggest supporter. Family meant everything to him, and no distance was ever too far when it came to being there for those he loved—he never missed a baptism, communion, graduation, or wedding. Patrick was truly in his element at family gatherings, happiest when sitting around the table, sharing stories, laughing, and making lasting memories with the people he loved most.

Patrick was preceded in death by his beloved parents, John T. Cotter and Rita Cotter, as well as his brother, John Patrick Cotter.

He is survived by his loving sisters: Margaret Murtagh (John), Noreen Garrett (Wayne), and Anne Marie Chmura (Thomas). Patrick also leaves behind a cherished legacy as the devoted uncle to his nieces and nephew: Patricia O’Shea, Karen Murtagh, John J. Murtagh, Laura Buschelman, Kaitlyn Whale, Danielle Chmura, Kristen Schweitzer, and Nicole Chmura, along with many dear great-nieces and great-nephews who brought immense light to his life.

Patrick will be remembered for his warm heart, steadfast kindness, and the fierce loyalty he showed to his family and community.

Family will receive friends on Sunday, August 23, 2026 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm with a prayer wake service to take place at 7pm.

A funeral mass will take place at 10am on Monday, August 24, 2026 at St. Mary Catholic Church located at 15520 N Blvd, Tampa, FL 33613.
