Born on September 30, 1949, in Marshall County, South Dakota, Roy grew up with Midwestern roots that shaped his warmth, humor, and steady presence throughout his life.
Roy completed his high school education and proudly served in the United States Army honoring his country with dedication and integrity, working first in logistics and then became a Sgt and worked in the military police division. After his service, he built a life defined by simplicity, curiosity, and a love for stories in all their forms.
He had a deep appreciation for science-fiction, spending countless hours watching his favorite movies and TV shows. Going to the movies was one of his greatest joys—an experience he cherished not just for the stories themselves, but for the sense of escape and wonder they brought him. He also loved reading spy novels, often losing himself in the thrill of each intricate plot.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Smith; his brother, Roger Smith; his sons, Travis Smith and his wife Samantha and Troy Smith; two grandchildren, Travis Jr. and Elizabeth Smith.
His family will forever hold close the memory of his gentle spirit, his quiet enthusiasm for the worlds found in books and film, and the love he shared with those nearest to him.
Roy will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Service information will be updated once Military Honors are confirmed for Florida National Cemetery.
